A finishing detail can be small. These three options begin with a plainly wrapped box and use scraps rather than a spool of ribbon. Choose one option for a single parcel; you do not need all three at once. Practice with loose paper before attaching anything, and keep the recipient's name more prominent than the decoration.
Try a straight paper band
Cut a strip wide enough to lie flat around the box. Wrap it across the main seam and join the ends at the back with a little tape. If one strip is too short, overlap two pieces and hide the join underneath. Slip a folded tag under the front of the band and check that it will not fall out when the box is moved.
Fold a small corner accent
Start with a square of paper and fold it diagonally into a triangle. Fold once more for a smaller triangle, then open that last fold slightly for a layered shape. Place it near one corner of the parcel, keeping it clear of the name. Attach the underside lightly. This is a decorative folded accent, not a pocket intended to hold the gift securely.
Make a short paper flag
Fold a narrow strip in half. With the folded edge at the top, cut a shallow notch from the two free ends to make a flag shape. Write a name or a short greeting on one side. Attach the back to the parcel or the paper band. Make the notch small enough that there is still room for the message.
Check the journey
Lift the parcel and check that the detail stays in place. For a gift that must travel in a bag, choose the flat band rather than the raised fold. Keep loose pieces away from young children and pets. Remove the decoration before deciding how to reuse or dispose of each material.
